Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Japan?
If you hold a US passport, you do not need a visa for a tourist stay in Japan of up to 90 days. Indian passport holders, including green card holders, need a Japan tourist visa before they fly, and the visa fee is not part of the tour price. Every family's paperwork is a little different, so contact us and we will guide you on what to apply for and when.
Are the meals vegetarian?
Yes, and Jain too. Breakfast is a continental buffet at the hotel every morning. Lunch and dinner on the touring days are Indian meals, as listed in the day plan, with Jain, vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices. The trip starts with an Indian dinner on your arrival evening in Osaka, so even day one ends with a familiar meal.
What is not included in the tour price?
The price covers the land tour only. It does not include international flights, Japan visa fees, travel insurance, porterage, personal expenses, meals not listed in the day plan, optional activities, or early check-in and late check-out charges. Any rise in taxes, entrance fees or exchange rates before departure is also extra. Driver tips are already included, so that is one envelope you do not need.
Are international flights included?
No. The price is land only, so you book your own international flights, or we can book them for you. The tour starts in Osaka and ends in Tokyo, so an open jaw ticket, flying into Osaka and home from Tokyo, saves you a long trip back across Japan. The bullet train to Hiroshima and back, and all coach transfers on tour, are included.
How much walking is there, and how often do we change hotels?
You stay four nights in Osaka at the start, then a new hotel each night in Nagoya, Toyama and Nagano, and finish with two nights in Tokyo. Some days are on your feet for hours: Fushimi Inari's torii paths, Nara Park, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and a full Tokyo day. On the Alpine Route day you ride cable cars, ropeways and buses between stops. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else you pack.
What is the weather like on this tour?
This tour runs in October, which is autumn in Japan. Days in Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo are usually mild and comfortable for sightseeing. It gets much colder up on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, so keep a warm layer in your day bag for that day.
Need to know
- Meals on arrival and departure days depend on flight times. If your flight lands early in the morning or leaves late in the evening, Akshar Travels will arrange the meals for that day
- If a sight is closed on the day it is scheduled, we will replace it with a comparable sight on the same tour
- Hotel check-in is usually 3:00 pm and check-out is usually 12:00 noon. Early check-in and late check-out are subject to availability and may carry a charge
- Baggage on domestic and internal flights follows the airline's own policy and weight limits, which are often lower than on your international flight. Please pack to the lowest allowance on your tour. Excess baggage fees are charged by the airline and paid by the guest
