Day by day

Day 1: Welcome to Jordan and the Dead Sea

Amman, Dead Sea

Sights: Queen Alia International Airport, Dead Sea

Your Jordan stopover begins the moment you step off the plane at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. A representative meets you right in the immigration area, helps you through the formalities and walks you to the luggage hall, so your arrival is calm and easy.

With your bags collected, your private car and English-speaking driver are waiting. The road leaves the city and drops steadily through bare, golden hills toward the Jordan Valley. The air grows warmer as you descend, until the still blue water of the Dead Sea appears below, the lowest point on earth, with the hills of the far shore soft in the haze.

At your resort you check in and the rest of the day is yours. You can rest after the flight, walk down to the shore, or watch the sun set over the water from your room before a quiet first night by the sea.

Hotel: Hilton Dead Sea or similar

Day 2: A full day at Petra, the rose red city

Petra, Dead Sea

Sights: Petra visitor center, horse ride to the Siq, the Siq, the Treasury, Petra ancient city

After breakfast your driver takes you south along the Desert Highway, across wide open plateau and small desert towns, to Petra, about three hours from Amman.

At the visitor center you meet your local guide and set off on horseback for about 700 meters to the start of the Siq. Then you walk through this narrow gorge, nearly a kilometer long, its rose and ochre walls rising up to 200 meters on either side. At the end of the Siq the Treasury appears through the gap, its carved columns glowing in the light. Petra was built by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the new wonders of the world. After the guided walk you have time to explore before you walk back to the visitor center.

The drive back follows the Wadi Araba road down to the Dead Sea, where you arrive in the evening for your second night by the water.
