Day by day

Day 1: Welcome to Jordan

Amman

Sights: Queen Alia International Airport, Amman

Your Jordan journey begins as you land at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. A representative meets you right in the immigration area, helps you through the arrival formalities and walks you to the luggage hall, so your first moments in the country are calm and easy.

With your bags collected, your private car and English-speaking driver are waiting. The road runs north through open country toward the capital, a city built across many hills, its houses of pale local limestone giving Amman its name as the white city.

At your hotel you check in and the rest of the day is yours. You can rest after the long flight, or step out for a first look at the city and a cup of sweet mint tea. Tonight you sleep in Amman, ready to begin exploring in the morning.

Hotel: Amman International Hotel or similar

Day 2: Amman, Ajloun Castle and Roman Jerash

Amman, Ajloun, Jerash, Amman

Sights: Amman Citadel, Temple of Hercules, Roman Theatre, Ajloun Castle, Jerash

After breakfast you set out to see Amman. You begin on Citadel Hill, the oldest part of the city, where the tall columns of the Temple of Hercules stand beside the remains of an Umayyad palace, with the whole city spread out below. Then you go down to the Roman Theatre, carved into the hillside nearly 2,000 years ago and still used for performances today.

Next the road climbs north into green hills of pine and olive trees to Ajloun Castle, built in 1184 by a general of Saladin to guard the trade routes. From its towers you look out over the northern Jordan Valley. Then you continue to Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman cities in the world, with its grand arch, colonnaded streets, temples and theatres. A local guide walks with you here. Lunch is at leisure.

In the late afternoon you drive back to your hotel in Amman for a second night.

Day 3: Mount Nebo, Madaba and Shobak Castle

Mount Nebo, Madaba, Shobak, Petra

Sights: Mount Nebo, Church of Saint George, Madaba mosaic map, Wadi Mujib viewpoint, Shobak Castle

After breakfast you leave Amman and head southwest to Mount Nebo, where tradition holds that Moses looked out over the Promised Land. From the summit the view reaches across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, and on clear days as far as Jerusalem and Jericho.

A short drive brings you to Madaba, the City of Mosaics. Inside the Church of Saint George you see the famous 6th century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, made from more than two million colored stones. Then you travel south and stop above Wadi Mujib, a deep canyon that is one of the most striking views in Jordan. Continuing along the Desert Highway, you visit Shobak Castle, a Crusader fortress from 1115 standing alone on a hilltop. Lunch is at leisure.

In the evening you arrive in Petra and check in at your hotel, close to the gates of the ancient city.

Hotel: The Old Village Resort or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Day 4: Petra and a night in Wadi Rum

Petra, Wadi Rum

Sights: Petra visitor center, horse ride to the Siq, the Siq, the Treasury, Petra ancient city, Wadi Rum, Moon Valley, Bedouin dinner

After breakfast you walk to the gates of Petra, one of the new seven wonders of the world. A short horse ride takes you from the visitor center to the start of the Siq, a narrow gorge about a kilometer long with rose colored walls rising up to 200 meters. At the end, the Treasury appears through the gap, its carved facade glowing in the morning light.

Petra was built by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago, and its rugged setting kept it free of Roman rule until 106 AD. A local guide shares its story, and then you have time to explore the tombs, temples and streets carved into the cliffs. Lunch is at leisure.

In the afternoon you drive south to Wadi Rum, the Valley of the Moon, a desert of red sand and towering granite cliffs. You explore Moon Valley, then check in at your camp for a traditional Bedouin dinner under a sky full of stars.

Hotel: Mazayen Camp or similar

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Day 5: Wadi Rum by jeep and the Dead Sea

Wadi Rum, Dead Sea

Sights: Wadi Rum 4x4 jeep tour, Dead Sea

You wake in the quiet of the desert, with the morning light turning the cliffs of Wadi Rum from gold to red. After breakfast you check out of the camp.

Then you climb into an open Bedouin jeep for a 2 hour tour of the desert. You cross wide plains of soft red sand between huge rock formations shaped by wind over millions of years, a landscape that T. E. Lawrence called vast and echoing. Your Bedouin driver knows every track through this wilderness, which has been home to his people for centuries.

Later you drive north to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, more than 400 meters below sea level. At your resort you check in and enjoy free time. The water is about ten times saltier than the ocean, so you float on the surface without any effort. You spend a peaceful last night by the sea.

Hotel: Hilton Dead Sea or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Day 6: Farewell to Jordan

Amman

Sights: Queen Alia International Airport

Your last morning in Jordan begins with breakfast at the resort and a final look across the still water of the Dead Sea.

After check out, your private car and driver take you back up through the hills to Queen Alia International Airport in Amman for your flight home.

You leave with Jordan in your memory: Roman columns at Jerash, the first sight of the Treasury, the silence of Wadi Rum and the gentle lift of the Dead Sea. Safe travels home.
