Things to Do in Osaka, With Vegetarian Food and Cocktail Bars

We plan Japan trips and run tours there, so our travel experts keep a running list of the places they actually send people. This is the Osaka one, shared so you get the local gems and not just the famous names.

Inside: the sights worth your time, where to eat as a vegetarian, the coffee worth crossing town for, and a bar list we are still working through. Osaka often gets one night between Tokyo and Kyoto. Give it more. Nara and Kyoto are both easy day trips from here, so it makes a great base, and the food alone is worth the stay. This is part of the Akshar Travels Founders Series: the lists our own team uses to plan Japan.

Last checked October 2026. Places our team has been are written from experience, and anything we found but have not tried yet is marked. If a place has changed, tell us and we will update the list.

What to see and do in Osaka

Our team has done every stop in this section. Each one links to Google Maps, so you can pin it as you read.

The Nintendo store inside Daimaru Shinsaibashi

Shinsaibashi and Namba

Central Osaka, the Minami side of the city

Street markets and vintage shops. Shinsaibashi-suji is the long covered shopping street, and the vintage stores cluster in Amerikamura, a few blocks west. Our Japan shopping guide has the rest of the thrift map. Go in the late afternoon and keep walking south into Dotonbori as the lights come on.

Dotonbori

The canal at the south end of Shinsaibashi

The street food mecca. The canal, the giant moving signs, the Glico running man, and a queue at every takoyaki stand.

The honest note for vegetarians: I am not sure about the veggie options here. Takoyaki has octopus inside, and okonomiyaki batter and sauces usually carry dashi, the fish stock most Japanese cooking starts from. Come for the atmosphere, then eat at one of the places further down this post.

The main tower is a 1931 reconstruction with a museum inside. The grounds around it are the part worth your time: the moats, the huge stone walls and the park. Walk the outer moat before you go in.

Hundreds of small red daruma dolls stacked on the steps at Katsuoji

Katsuoji Temple

Minoh, in the hills north of the city

Peaceful and pretty. Katsuoji is known for the small red daruma dolls left all over the grounds: on the steps, the walls, the lanterns.

If you go, get the temple stamp. Temples write and stamp a goshuin, a calligraphy seal, into a small book for a small fee. Buy the book at the first temple you visit and by the end of the trip it is the best souvenir you own.

An udon making class

Several schools in central Osaka

We took an udon making class: kneading the dough, stepping on it, cutting the noodles by hand, then eating what you made. It is hands on and a little silly, and it will not be everyone's thing. If you like that kind of afternoon, book one. Vegetarians, ask about the broth first, because the standard one is dashi.

Nara

A day trip east of Osaka

Cute deer everywhere. None as cute as me, though.

The deer of Nara Park wander the streets, the temple grounds and the lawns. Hold up a shika senbei, the deer crackers sold from stalls around the park, and bow, and many of them bow back. They are also very direct about wanting the crackers. Todai-ji and its giant bronze Buddha are in the same park. It is about 40 minutes from Namba on the Kintetsu line, so it fits easily into half a day.

Planning Osaka? Send us your dates and we will turn this list into a day by day plan for your trip, with the hotel, the day trips and vegetarian meals sorted.

Eating vegetarian

Most Japanese cooking starts with dashi, a stock made from bonito fish flakes. Saying no meat is not enough.

Ask for no fish stock as well, every time, including for soups, sauces and noodles that look completely vegetarian. Or skip the question and go to a place that is fully plant based from the start. These two are.

Watashi wa bejitarian desu. I am vegetarian.

Dashi nuki de onegaishimasu. Without fish stock, please.

  • Green Earth

Fully vegan, with no meat, fish, eggs, dairy or MSG in anything. A lunch place: open Monday to Saturday until late afternoon, closed Sundays and holidays.

  • MERCY Vegan Ramen

The ramen spot. Every bowl is plant based and gluten free, broth included; the soy milk tantanmen is the one to order. Open late, closed Wednesdays, and there is a second shop in Kyoto at Shijo Kawaramachi for your day trip.

Coffee and matcha

Two in Osaka and one for your Kyoto day. For the full list across Japan, see our coffee and matcha guide.

    Nakanoshima

Tokyo's well known single origin roaster, with an Osaka shop on the ground floor of Festival Tower West in Nakanoshima. Open from 8 in the morning on weekdays, so it works as the first stop of the day.

  • Haiku Coffee Roasters

    North of Nakazakicho

A small batch roaster that started in Nakazakicho, Osaka's old house cafe neighborhood, and now sits a short walk north near Tenjinbashisuji 6-chome. Pour overs roasted on site, and vegan cookies on the counter. Open noon to 5.

  • Kurasu, Kyoto

    For your Kyoto day

A Kyoto specialty coffee roaster that, word has it, also makes the best matcha in town. Save it for your Kyoto day.

The Osaka bar list

Full disclosure: this one comes from a Reddit thread by a traveler who spent two weeks working through Osaka's cocktail bars, not from our own nights out. It was too good to keep to ourselves, so here it is, grouped by the kind of night you want. Most of these are tiny, so book ahead on weekends.

Chill, no menu, experimental

  • Nayuta
Amerikamura, up on the fifth floor through a very low door. No menu: tell the bartender what you like and let them build it.
  • Bar Shiki
Same easy, off script spirit as Nayuta.
  • Bar Hollow
Around the corner from Nayuta in Amerikamura. Balanced, minimal cocktails.

Tiny and unique

  • Craftroom
Two floors underground in the Osaka Ekimae Daiichi Building in Umeda, behind a sign you will walk past twice. Creative twists on the classics, and in 2024 the first Osaka bar on Asia's 50 Best Bars.
  • Kirip Truman
Riverside in Kitahama. The owner runs ingredients through a lab instrument and pairs flavors that share aroma molecules. Very fancy, and very good.
  • Ista Coffee Elements
Eight seats near Sakaisuji-Hommachi, coffee cocktails from a world champion barista who roasts his beans at the end of the bar. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

Prohibition style

  • Bible Club
The sister bar of Bible Club in Portland, Oregon, in a Shinsaibashi basement full of antiques. Solid American style cocktails, the closest thing to a pre-Prohibition bar in Japan. Closed Wednesdays.

The classic Japanese cocktail bar

A short menu of classics, made with absurd precision.

For your Kyoto day: a rooftop

  • K36 Rooftop
The rooftop bar of Hotel The Seiryu in Kyoto. Walk into the hotel and follow the signs up. The view takes in the Yasaka Pagoda and the Higashiyama rooftops. There is a 1,100 yen per person charge, cash or card.

Want Osaka planned like this?

This is the level of detail our Japan team plans at. Tell us your dates and we will do the same for your trip, tuned to how you travel: the hotel in the right neighborhood, the day trips in the right order, and vegetarian or Jain meals sorted before you land.

Akshar Travels plans luxury Japan too: the hotels and ryokan worth the splurge, the best rates we can find for your dates, and reserved seats on the bullet train in the weeks they sell out.

Every trip prices differently, depending on the hotels, the dates and what you want to do, so there is no number to publish here. Tell us your dates and we will price it against your trip.

FAQ

Is Osaka worth more than one night?

Yes. Osaka often gets one night between Tokyo and Kyoto, but Nara and Kyoto are both easy day trips from here, so it works well as a base for three or four nights, and the food alone is worth the stay.

Is it easy to eat vegetarian in Osaka?

It is easy once you know about dashi, the fish stock in most Japanese cooking. Ask for no fish stock as well as no meat, or go to fully plant based places like Green Earth or MERCY Vegan Ramen.

Can you do Nara as a day trip from Osaka?

Yes. Nara is a short train ride from Namba, and the deer park and Todai-ji fit comfortably into half a day.

What is the best area to stay in Osaka?

Namba and Shinsaibashi put you within walking distance of Dotonbori, Amerikamura and the best food streets, with fast trains to Nara and Kyoto.

Where can I find cocktail bars in Osaka?

Amerikamura, Umeda, Kitahama and Kitashinchi have the best small cocktail bars. Most seat ten or fewer people, so book ahead on weekends.
