OCI Card Consulting for Chicago and All of Illinois

Illinois is home to a large and well-established Indian-origin community, especially across the Chicago metropolitan area including Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora, Evanston, and surrounding suburbs. For families of Indian origin living in Illinois, the OCI card is an essential document that gives lifelong visa-free access to India and the right to live, work, and study there without a separate visa.

All OCI applications from Illinois are submitted through the Consulate General of India in Chicago, which covers Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. Akshar Travels coordinates every step of this consulate process for our Illinois clients. Whether you are in Chicago, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora, Rockford, Peoria, or anywhere else in Illinois, we manage your complete OCI application virtually, by phone, email and WhatsApp.

We handle new OCI applications, OCI updates and re-issues after a new passport, and OCI for spouses and children. PIO to OCI conversion ended on December 31, 2025. If you still hold an old PIO card, you now apply for OCI as a new application, and we guide you through it. If you are unsure whether you are eligible or what type of application applies to you, we tell you on the first call, before you gather anything.

How Chicago and All of Illinois Clients Work With Us

Call or Email Us

Tell us what you need and where you are located. We confirm your consulate jurisdiction and the exact documents required.

We Send Your Checklist

We send a complete, case-specific document checklist. You gather your documents following our guide.

Share Your Documents Virtually

Send photos or scans of your documents by email or WhatsApp. We check every page, complete the forms and prepare your packet. If the consulate needs originals, we tell you exactly what to send and how to pack them.

We Submit and Track

We review everything, complete your application, submit to the correct consulate, and track status until your documents are returned to you.

Passport renewal from Illinois

Indian passport renewal runs through the same consulate as your OCI case, by way of the VFS Global centre that serves Illinois. We prepare the Passport Seva form, check the photos and the proofs of address and status, and tell you exactly what goes in the packet and where it goes.

US passport renewal is a federal process, the same from every state: a DS-82 by mail when your last passport was issued within the past fifteen years and after you turned sixteen, otherwise a DS-11 in person at an acceptance facility. We check the form and the photo before anything goes out, and we tell you which processing option fits your travel date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Indian consulate handles OCI applications from Illinois?

The Consulate General of India in Chicago handles OCI applications from Illinois. Akshar Travels manages this consulate coordination on behalf of every Illinois client we work with.

Do I need to visit an Akshar office?

No. We work with Illinois clients entirely virtually, by phone, email and WhatsApp. Clients in Chicago, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora, Evanston, and across Illinois use us regularly without ever visiting an office. You stay in Illinois throughout the entire process.

How long does OCI processing take from Illinois?

Current processing through the Chicago consulate is approximately 8 to 16 weeks. Volumes can increase around Indian government holidays and peak travel seasons. We monitor your application status throughout and keep you informed of any changes to your expected timeline.

Who is eligible for an OCI card in Illinois?

Any Indian-born person who has become a US citizen is eligible. Children and grandchildren of someone who was an Indian citizen can also apply. Spouses of Indian citizens or OCI holders are eligible if the marriage has lasted at least two years. We confirm your eligibility on the first call, before you gather any documents.

Do I need to renew my OCI card when I renew my US passport?

Not always. If your OCI card was issued before age 20, you need a new OCI card once, the first time you get a new passport after turning 20. In most other cases, a new passport means updating your passport details on the OCI portal instead. Rules do change, so we check your case first. We handle re-issues and updates for Illinois clients and coordinate the timing with your passport renewal.

What if my OCI application gets rejected?

Rejections are most commonly caused by photo specification errors, name mismatches across documents, or missing supporting papers. Our pre-submission review is specifically designed to catch all of these before your application goes to the Chicago consulate. If a rejection does occur, we analyze the reason and help you resubmit a corrected application.
